### **Analysis of Buying a Mercedes-Benz W124/W126 300CE/560SEL/E320 (2017, VIN 0008201709) with a Third High-Mount Brake Light**

#### **Pros**

1. **Reliability and Durability**

- The W124 and W126 models (1991 2001) are known for their robust engineering, particularly the **M113 V8 (300CE/560SEL)** and **M112 inline-6 (E320)** engines. These engines, when well-maintained, can last **200,000 miles** with proper servicing.

- The **5-speed automatic transmission (5G-Tronic in later models)** is durable, though some early models had weaker torque converters.

- The **chassis and suspension** are solid, with good handling for their class, though later models (post-1997) had improved electronics and comfort.

2. **Classic Mercedes-Benz Prestige**

- The **W124 (sedan) and W126 (coupe/touring)** are iconic German luxury cars with strong resale value among enthusiasts.

- The **300CE/560SEL** (V8 models) offer **superior power (204 282 hp)** compared to the E320 (170 hp), making them more engaging to drive.

- The **interior quality** remains high, with premium materials (leather, wood trim, power adjustments) that age well.

3. **Third High-Mount Brake Light (HML) Compliance**

- The presence of a **third brake light** (common in later W124/W126 models) indicates compliance with **post-1998 U.S. safety regulations**, making it easier to register in some states.

- Some older W124s without this feature may require aftermarket installation, adding cost.

4. **Potential for Modifications & Customization**

- The **M113 V8** is a favorite among tuners, with aftermarket support for **turbocharging, fuel injection upgrades, and suspension modifications**.

- The **E320 (M112)** can be upgraded with **performance exhausts, ECU tuning, or suspension swaps** for better handling.

- The **W126 s coupe body style** is highly sought after for its **aerodynamic efficiency and classic looks**.

5. **Lower Running Costs (Compared to Modern Luxury Cars)**

- **Fuel efficiency** is decent for its class ( 12 15 MPG city, 16 18 MPG highway for the V8; slightly better for the E320).

- **Parts availability** is still good, though pricing has risen due to age and demand.

- **Insurance costs** are typically lower than for newer luxury sedans.

---

#### **Cons**

1. **Age-Related Wear and Maintenance Needs**

- **Timing belt replacement** is critical **M112 (E320) and M113 (V8) require this every 60,000 100,000 miles** (some sources recommend 80,000 100,000). Failure can cause **catastrophic engine damage**.

- **Water pump, thermostat, and hoses** may need replacement, especially if the car has high mileage.

- **Suspension components (shocks, bushings, ball joints)** wear out over time and can affect ride quality.

- **Electrical issues** (faulty sensors, wiring harnesses) are common in older Mercedes, requiring **diagnostic tools and patience**.

2. **Potential for Hidden Mechanical Issues**

- **Transmission wear** some 5G-Tronic transmissions develop **slippage or rough shifting** over time.

- **Power steering leaks** (especially in V8 models) can occur due to aging seals.

- **Exhaust manifold cracks** (common in M113 V8s) may require replacement.

- **Rust** if the car has seen **salt exposure or poor storage**, check for **floor pans, rocker panels, and wheel wells**.

3. **High Maintenance Costs**

- **Labor costs** for Mercedes are **expensive** (even more than BMW or Audi in some cases).

- **Specialized parts** (e.g., **M113 V8 fuel injectors, M112 water pump**) can be **priced higher than OEM**.

- **Diagnostic time** is often **longer** due to complex electronics.

4. **Safety and Modern Standards**

- **Lack of modern safety features** no **ESC, advanced airbag systems, or modern crash structures** compared to today s standards.

- **Visibility** some W124/W126 models have **narrow rear windows** and **poor blind-spot coverage**.

- **Fuel economy** is **poor by today s standards** ( 12 18 MPG), making long trips costly.

5. **Market and Depreciation Factors**

- **Resale value** is **not as strong** as it was 10 15 years ago due to **increased supply of restored classics**.

- **Title/accident history** older Mercedes are **more likely to have been in accidents**, so a **detailed inspection is crucial**.

- **Insurance for high-mileage classics** can be **expensive** unless it s a **restored show car**.

6. **Third High-Mount Brake Light Limitations**

- While the **HML makes registration easier**, it **does not guarantee** the car is **fully compliant with modern emissions standards** (some states require **smog checks**).

- If the car has **high mileage**, **emissions-related issues** (e.g., **EGR, catalytic converter failures**) may arise.

---

### **Key Considerations Before Purchase**

1. **Service History is Critical**

- **Timing belt replacement records** must be verified.

- **Transmission fluid changes** (every 30,000 50,000 miles).

- **Suspension and steering components** should be checked for wear.

- **Electrical system** should be tested (fault codes, sensor functionality).

2. **Budget for Repairs**

- **Expect $3,000 $8,000 in repairs** within the first year if major issues exist.

- **Budget for a full restoration** if buying a **high-mileage example** ( $15,000 $30,000 ).

3. **Test Drive and Inspection**

- **Listen for unusual noises** (knocking, whining, rattles).

- **Check for leaks** (oil, coolant, power steering).

- **Test all electronics** (windows, locks, climate control).

- **Road test suspension and braking** (especially if the car has **high mileage**).

4. **Legal and Registration Considerations**

- **Check state laws** some require **smog checks, emissions testing, or specific safety modifications**.

- **Third brake light helps**, but **other compliance issues** (e.g., **headlight bulbs, turn signals**) may still apply.

### **Final Recommendation**

#### **Buy If:**

You are **passionate about classic Mercedes-Benz** and willing to **invest time/money in maintenance**.

The car has a **clean service history** (especially **timing belt, transmission, suspension**).

You **enjoy driving a powerful, engaging luxury car** (V8 models are **more fun** than the E320).

You **plan to restore it to showroom condition** and **keep it long-term**.

You **budget for potential major repairs** (transmission, suspension, electrical).

#### **Avoid If:**

You **need a reliable daily driver** with **minimal maintenance**.

You **cannot afford unexpected repairs** (older Mercedes **break down more often**).

You **live in a state with strict emissions/safety laws** and the car **does not meet them**.

You **prefer modern safety and fuel efficiency** (this is a **90s-era car**).

The **price is too high** (a **well-documented, low-mileage example** should not exceed **$15,000 $25,000** for a V8; **$10,000 $18,000** for an E320).

#### **Best Approach:**

- **Get a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) from a Mercedes specialist.**

- **Verify VIN history (Carfax/AutoCheck) for accidents or title issues.**

- **Consider a **restored example** if buying used look for **full service records and warranty coverage.**

- **If buying a project car**, **budget for a full rebuild** (engine, transmission, suspension, interior).

Details:

When I come across items usually older Mercedes, but occasionally a BMW, Range Rover, etc will catch my eye that don't need and/or look to be in good condition, remove them from the donor cars with care and bring home. While this brake light is stronger and less sun baked than most, it still 35 year old plastic. I have 3 Mercedes 124s 1987 300TD wagon, 1991 300D, and a 1988 300CE to keep them in as close tip top shape possible save money frequent the pick-n-pull yards on regular basis. As you can tell from my prices I am not out to get rich doing this.

HISTORY OF 124RESCUE. I am not a mechanic. Because these items are so fragile, I didn attempt to open the rear cover fix reflector for fear of breaking housing assembly. Price reflects any/all defects.

One small crack in top of housing, minimal lens melting as well. Happy Motoring. Mercedes W124 W126 TESTED 3rd brake light assembly for Coupes ONLY in good used condition. This doesn affect the functionality of light.

Reflector has come loose on inside of assembly. I am an enthusiast.
